OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE

[The war of the rebellion: a compilation of the official records of the Union and Confederate armies.  Series 1 - Volume 11 (Part I) Govt. Print. Off. 1884.  pps. 420-421]

Report of Col. William M. Levy, Second Louisiana Infantry,
of engagement at Dam No. I (Lee’s Mill).

CAMP OF SECOND LOUISIANA VOLUNTEER REGIMENT,
Dam No. 1, Va., April 18, 1862.

SIR:
On the.l6th instant, at about 8 a.m., the enemy appeared in
considerable force in the woods and rear portion of Garrow’s field,
opposite the position occupied by the Second Louisiana Regiment.
In a few minutes two pieces of artillery were put in position and
opened a fire of shell upon us. This was briskly replied to by the
6-pounder field piece of the Troup Artillery, belonging to Colonel
Cobb’s (Georgia) Legion, and by a few shots from the 12-pounder
howitzer, Captain Jordan’s battery.

During the morning and up to about. 3 o’clock sharp artillery firing
was kept up on both sides, and the infantry was engaged in skirmishing
at pretty long range. A little after 3 o’clock the enemy brought up
more artillery and displayed six pieces (two rifled Parrott’s) and opened
a furious cannonade, which the kept up, with scarcely the slightest
intermission, for three hours. While throwing their shells upon us a
bold rush was made across the river or creek by a considerable body of
the enemy’s infantry, who suddenly dashed through the water and, under
cover of the woods, reached the rifle pits in front of time position of the
Fifteenth North Carolina Regiment. This regiment, with the exception
of its picket, was at work intrenching its camp, and while leading his
men to charge the enemy Colonel McKinney tell and died instantly,
gallantly pressing forward at the head of his Commnand. This unfor-
tunate death of Colonel McKiuney threw the Fifteenth into momentary
confusion, and the enemy was then at the rifle pits and about to cross
them.

At this time Companies B (Capt. A. II. Martin) and D (Capt. B. E.Burke),
of the Second Louisiana Regiment, under the direction of Major Norwood,
of that regiment, threw themselves from their position at the redoubt and
curtain on the crest of the hill and attacked the enemy along the left of the
rifle pits, while the Seventh Georgia vigorously attacked them along the rest
of the line, and the Eighth Georgia came up on the right of the Seventh Georgia.
Companies I (Captain Flournoy) and K (Captain Kelso), Second Louisiana
Regiment, stationed at the lower redoubt, near Damn No. 1, opened fire upon
the enemy from their position at the redoubt. The rapid and vigorous attack of
our troops at once. checked the enemy, and in a few minutes they precipi-
tately retreated, recrossed the creek, and sought shelter, from the havoc
which pursued them, under cover of their field pieces. Shortly afterward the
movements of the enemy showed that with a large force they intended to
renew their effort to break our lines, and with a largely. increased force they
again attempted to cross, but were speedily repulsed, retreating in disorder.

I have no means of ascertaining the numnber of killed and wounded
on the part of the enemy; but from the bodies left on this side and
the removal from the field on the other side of bodies I am satisfied
that it must have amounted to at least 200.

I cannot refrain from mnentioning that, as falling under my imme-
diate observation, while the conduct of all our troops was most satis-
factory, the Seventh Georgia Regiment, the section of the Troup Artil-
lery (Captain Stanley), and time companies of the Second Louisiana
Regiment which I have enumerated, manifested the most praiseworthy
alacrity and intrepidity.

After his second decisive repulse the enemy retired their infantry
from the held, and, night coming on, the combat ceased, leaving us in
full possession of our position, from which we had not moved except
to drive back and pursue the enemy, and in the enjoyment of the
pleasing knowledge that we had repulsed a foe largely exceeding us in
numbers.

I have the honor to remain sir, very respectfully, your obedient servant.

WM. M. LEVY,

Colonel, Comdg. Second Louisiana Regiment and Dam No. 1.

Capt. JAMES BAUM, Assistant Adjutant- General of Brigade.

Report of Lieut. Cot. R. B. Burke, Second Louisiana Infantry.
CAMP IN THE FIELD, May —, 1863.
SIR:    In accordance with General Orders, No. —, I submit the follow-
ing report of the operations of the Second Louisiana Regiment on May 2 and 3:

We were placed in line of battle with the other regiments of the bri-
gade, and moved forward toward the Plank road, which we reached
just after (lark, being subjected to the enemy’s artillery fire in passing
through the fields in front of that road, by which we lost the color-
bearer and several other men. We were halted near the road and ordered
to lie down, our line of battle running parallel with the Plank road.
After some time, moved in upon the road and marched up it toward the
Chancellor house, halting at about 800 or 1,000 yards from the enemy’s
works. Soon after, the enemy opened with artillery, which swept the
whole road. Great confusion existed, but the regiment did not move
from their position, lying down just where they had been drawn up,
which fortunately saved great loss of life, as only 3 men were slightly
wounded by this fire. We were afterward filed to the left into the
woods, and took position with our line facing the Chancellor house in
which position we were occasionally subjected to the enemy’s artillery
 fire during the night.

At dawn we moved forward upon the enemy’s lines in front. At this
time we formed the second line of battle, and though for some time sub-
jected to the enemy’s fire, could not return it. We were moved then by
the left flank for some distance and again marched to the front, which
brought us on the front line. Here the enemy’s skirmishers opened
fire. They were im mediately driven in, and we engaged their line. It
was discovered that they were throwing a force around our flank. Our
regiment was then thrown perpendicularly to the rear, it being the ex-
treme left regiment. This was effected in time to engage with success
the flanking force of the enemy and check their movement. Soon after,
from sonie cause, the regiments on our right fell back, and, finding that
there was no support on our right or left, though at the time checking
the enemy with ease, I thought it best to draw the regiment off, espe-
cially as it was just then reported to me that the enemy were still moving
to my left flank. I gave the order to march in retreat, which was done
without haste and in perfect order. I fell back 200 yards, where we
again formed line of battle, but farther to the left of the former position.
Soon after, the enemy, having advanced, opened fire, but upon my front
at long range. I ordered my men not to waste their ammunition, and
not to fire until they could see an object. In this way we were engaged
over half an hour, my right wing firing pretty briskly, being subjected
to a much severer fire than the left. In this way we expended about 25
rounds, when the order to charge was given, which was done in gallant
style under a very severe and galling fire, driving the enemy (Tyler’s
brigade) from their position in great confusion, capturing a colonel and
several officers of his command. We were then ordered back to the
Plank road to procure ammunition, which was entirely exhausted. We
were again moved to the Chancellor house, placed in line parallel to the
line of battle then formed on the Plank road near that house, and
ordered to advance, which we did, driving the enemy’s skirmishers in,
when their artillery opened upon us. Still we advanced, and, though
subjected to a most terrible fire, reached a point within 300 yards of the
enemy’s guns (some 12 in number) placed upon an elevated position.
For some reason the right did not reach this point, or, if so, had retired
from it, and I was forced to retire, numbering only 123 muskets in the
           regiment at that time.
With regard to the exact time of these different movements, I can
make no statement except that the one last reported was made after
12 m. on the 3d instant, and after the firing had ceased on our whole
           line.
I cannot say too much in just praise of the officers and men of this
regiment (never flinching from the most galling fire), and I report with
pride that none of this commaimd have failed in their utmost duty.
Where all have acted well and nobly I cannot make any distinction.
I am, with respect, your obedient servant,
            B.E. BURKE,
Lieutenant- Colonel, Commanding Second Louisiana Regiment.
                                      [Capt. ALEX. BOARMAN,
Acting Assistant Adjutant- General, Nicholls’ Brigade]

Reports of Cot. J. M. Williams, Second Louisiana Infantry, com-
manding Nicholls’ brigade.

HEADQUARTERS NICHOLLS’ BRIGADE,
June 16, 1863.

MAJOR: I have the honor to submit th& following report of the
action of Nicholls’ brigade in the battle of [Winchester], on June 15:
On the 14th instant, at 8 o’clock, the brigade was ordered to move
to a point designated by the commanding general on the Martinsburg
pike, 3-1/2 miles from Winchester, and to join General Stenart’s brigade,
then moving to the same point. The brigade joined General Steuart
on the Charlestown road, about 5 miles from the battle-field.
When General Stenart’s brigade reached the bridge over the Po-
tomac Railroad, the enemy fired into them, and I immediately formed
the brigade in line of battle parallel to the Martinsburg pike, and on
the left and perpendicular to the Charlestown road, and at the same
time ordered the Fourteenth Louisiana Regiment, Lieutenant-Colonel
Zable commanding, to take the same line, on the right of the Charles-
town road, near the railroad. Riding then to the front, I observed
that the line of the enemy, which was moving on the pike, was
changing direction so as to flank my left.
To meet this movement of the enemy, I ordered the Second Lou-
isiana, Lieutenant-Colonel [R. E.] Burke, and the Tenth Louisiana,
Major Powell, to change front, and . move perpendicularly to the
Martinsburg pike, and attack the flanking force. These regiments,
having met the enemy, moved by the left flank on parallel line with
the enemy’s line until he had discovered about 1,000 of his men;
then opened fire on his line, which was still moving by flank. These
regiments, after engaging the enemy with great success, were moved
off by the commanding general, who did them the honor of directing
their further action in person.
This detachment (Second and Tenth Louisiana Regiments) captured
about 1,000 prisoners, and the Second Louisiana captured a stand of
colors from the Sixty-seventh Pennsylvania.
The First Louisiana, Captain  Willett, and Fifteenth Louisiana,
Major Brady. were held in reserve during the first part of the engage-
ment, and were afterward moved to different positions as the circum-
stances seemed in my judgment to necessitate, but were not actively
engaged in the battle.
The officers and men, withont exception, behaved with much cool-
ness and determined bravery.
I would call particular attention to Capt. Alexander Boarman, act-
ing assistant adjutant-general, and Lieut. Joseph Taylor, acting aide-
de-camp, who behaved with much courage, gallantry, and efficiency,
and greatly assisted me in the engagement.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
[J. M. WILLIAMS,]
Colonel, Commanding Nicholls’ Brigade.

Maj. B. W. LEIGH,
Assistant Adjutant-General.

CAMP OF NICHOLLS’ BRIGADE,
August 28, 1863.

CAPTAIN: I have the honor to submit the following report of the
operations of Nicholls’ brigade at the battle of Gettysburg, Pa., on
July 1, 2, and 3:

On July 1, at about 7 o’clock, while marching on the Cashtown
road and toward Gettysburg, the brigade, being in front, was or-
dered by the major-general commanding to move to the east of
Gettysburg, along the railroad, about three-quarters of a mile from
town, and there, by his direction, was placed in line of battle on the
extreme right of the division, about 600 yards from and perpendicu-
lar to the railroad.
Here, having formed the line with the division, the brigade re-
mained until 7 p. m. of July 2, when, after changing position to the
left of Jones’ brigade, it was ordered forward in line of battle toward
the heights in front, about three-quarters of a mile.
The brigade engaged the enemy near the base of these heights,
and, having quickly driven his front line into the intrenchments on
their crest, continued forward until it reached a line about 100 yards
from the enemy’s works, when it again engaged him with an almost
incessant fire for four hours, pending which several attempts to carry
the works by assault, being entirely unsupported on the right (Jones’
brigade having failed to hold its line on the right), were attended
 with more loss than success.
The command remained in this position during the night, and at
early light opened on the enemy again, and continued to engage him
for four hours almost without cessation, and at intervals until 12 in.,
when the major-general commanding ordered the brigade to take
position near the ravine or creek, about 300 yards from the line held
during the night, where the command remained nutil about 3 a. m.
of July 4, when, under the direction of the major-general command-
ing, it was marched to the rear of Gettysburg.

Very respectfully, your most obedient servant,
 J.      M. WILLIAMS,

Colonel, Commanding Nicholls’ Brigade.
Maj. R. W. HUNTER,
                               Acting Assistant Adjutant-General.

Report of Capt. M. C. Redwine, Second Louisiana Infantry.

JANUARY 30, 1804.
CAPTAIN:
I respectfully submit the following report of the opera-
tions of this regiment during the battle of Payne’s Farm on Novem-
ber 27, in compliance with your circular of yesterday:
This regiment at the time of the fight was on the extreme right of
the brigade, which was formed in line of battle as soon as we were
apprised of the presence of the enemy. We remained in line on the
road for an hour or more, when we were ordered forward. We
started in quick time through a skirt of woods whose density forbade
the maintenance of that good order so necessary upon such occa-
sions, but the advance was continued in this way for about three-quar-
ters of a mile, when on mounting a hill we suddenly received a volley
from the enemy’s sharpshooters, who were posted behind a fence on
an eminence in a field immediately in our front. This circumstance
caused some confusion, and a report came down the lines that a halt
had been ordered.
We here endeavored to reform, but the fallen timber and the thick-
ness of the undergrowth precluded all possibility of rectifying our
alignment. In a few moments we were again ordered forward, and
on reaching the foot of the hill we encountered a heavy fencing that
inclosed the field in which the enemy were posted. Here confusion
again ensued, which caused a brief delay, but we were soon in the open
field and began the ascent, at a double-quick, of the hill upon which
was posted the enemy’s sharpshooters, who kept up an incessant fire
during the time. Ere we reached the crest of the hill we found it
necessary to change forward on the left, which was done in as good
order as the circumstances would permit, returning the enemy’s fire
as we reformed. This position we held until the close of the engage-
ment, at dark, when we were ordered back to our original position on
the road, from whence that night we accompanied the brigade to
Zoar Church.
Our casualties in this affair were 4 killed and 19 badly wounded.
Among the former was Lieuts. J. L. Cotton and F. C. McRae.
Very respectfully, &c.,
                    M.C. REDWINE,
                              Captain, Commanding Second Louisiana
Capt. H. E. HENDERSON,
