Crane Cross of Carrolton, Texas passed peacefully on
November 11, 2018
Memorial Service
will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in
The Chapel at Conroe Funeral Directors with the Rev. Ray
Hyden officiating.
Courtenay was born on April 8, 1942. She is survived by her
son/daughter-in-law: Marq LaFayette and Mary Ella Walters;
daughter/son-in-law: Keely and Mike Mobley; grandchildren:
Bennett Mobley, Hannah Mobley, and Julie Mobley. She was
preceded in death by her husband: John H. Cross; parents:
James M. and Faye P. Crane; brothers: Patrick B. Crane and
Joseph B. Crane.
Courtenay grew up in Conroe, Texas and graduated from Conroe
High School in 1960. After High school, she settled in
Tomball to raise her children with then-husband, Carlos R.
LaFayette. She earned her Early Childhood and Speech
Pathology degree at Sam Houston State University. She worked
in various school districts throughout the years, with one
of her latest schools being Sam Houston Elementary where she
had once been a student herself.
In later years, Courtenay married John Cross, and they
resided in Hillsboro, Texas. After John's passing, she
returned to Conroe and served as Executive Director at the
Heritage Museum of Montgomery County. Ms. Cross loved her
Montgomery County "roots" and invested much time researching
and sharing with others the history Montgomery County. She
later moved to Carrollton, Texas to be near her children and
grandchildren.
Ms. Cross was an avid movie and theater fan. She enjoyed
accompanying her children, grandchildren, and friends to
performances anywhere there was a stage! Though, her
favorite stages were those in New York. She even attended
the 2014 Tony Awards. Her favorite? Kinky Boots, which she
would sheepishly share, she had seen seven times. She lived
her life as echoed by Kinky Boots' character, Lola: "One
never knows what joy one might find amongst the unwanted."
