Hall of Fame Recipient 1995
Katherine Morton

      Katherine & Jack Morton

These are the verbatim comments made by Vera Wimberly in presenting the Hall of Fame Plaque to Katherine Morton.

"This is always the most fun part of our Founders Day Dinner, I think. And I'm so lucky to be able to be the one to name the 1995 recipient, who was selected by the Hall of Fame Committee.

Before I tell you all the neat things about our new inductee –

I would like to introduce the members who are past recipients of this Hall of Fame award. Would you stand as I call your names and remain standing until all have been introduced. I will ask that you hold your applause until all have been introduced.

#1       Imogene Kennedy      1988

#2       Vera Wimberly            1989

#3       Eileen Behrman          1990

#4       Elva Wilson                  1991

#5       Gene Tannery             1992

#6       Corinne Larvin          1993

#7       Jack Morton                 1994

To tell you a little about our honoree tonight, let's examine the criteria of being eligible for this award.

1. One had to have been a member in good standing of our society for at least 5 years. Our inductee joined our Society in April of 1989, so there is a year to spare.

2. One should have or is at the present tune serving as an officer in the society or served or serving on the Board of Directors This person served on the Nominating Committee in 1993, and is currently on the Board of Directors ‑ as Recording Secretary.

Since that is a dead giveaway ‑ Katherine Morton, will you please come up here so we can talk about you to your face?

Back to the criteria

3. One should have published either their family history or a genealogical aid ‑ or made 'a 'major contribution in some manner to the genealogical world or to the Society. Katherine abstracted the Deed Records Book F which our society has published and many copies have been sold. She has published a Diary of her Uncles made in the civil war. Her volunteer work for the genealogy department of the Montgomery County Library is substantial ‑ I know at least one day a week.

Her name was submitted in writing and voted on. Some of the comments were:

"Published. Good side-kick to husband, [President] Jack, as secretary. Works hard on all Society programs.

"She is a good person to represent our Society. She is genealogically knowledgeable. She is always pleasant and her demeanor portrays a real lady. "

"Active as an officer of our Society and regularly volunteers at library. Compiled a unique book of family funeral notices and history and supplied to Montgomery County and several other libraries.

The Genealogical Society is not her only interest. She is involved in several patriotic organizations. Those I know about are:

Currently serving as President of the local chapter of the DRT. Is Past Regent of Margaret Montgomery Chapter NSDAR.

She is active or holds membership in Huguenot Society, Colonial Dames, Descendants of the Founders of Hartford, Conn.

Now that is not all she does. She holds memberships in the River Plantation Garden Club, and the River Plantation Ladies Association. She is active in her church.

Now, a little more about her background. She is a native Texan having been born in Belton, Texas. I promised not to give the year of her birth. She is a graduate of Mirabeau B. Lamar High School, Houston, Texas and has earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas. Katherine has been married to Jack Morton for 50 years. Jack has been our President for the past five years, and was the recipient of the MCG&HS Hall of Fame last year. She and Jack have lived all over the United States, and Katherine can boast about having visited in 48 of the United States.

In their early marriage days, she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother in three different states, and was also a Sunday School Teacher. When she is not enjoying traveling by car, genealogy, swimming, tennis and hiking, she has time to experience the joys of her three sons, two grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-grandson.

Katherine, it is my distinct pleasure to present you with the coveted Hall of Fame plaque. So Now, Katherine, not only do you have your toothbrush hanging along side of Jack's, but you now can have your Hall of Fame Plaque hanging along side his also. Congratulations. I think last year's recipient may have a presentation also. [Pin corsage]
