Conroe Courier ‑ June 21, 1917.
Without the blowing of trumpets, beating of drums or the expenditure of much oratory; Conroe has contributed a good representation of her young men to Uncle Sam’s army and navy. The bulk of them are now in the various training camps, but some of them are on ther way to the front in France and will no doubt soon see actual warfare.
Below is a list of those who have gone from Conroe and a number, whose names we are not able to get, have gone from Montgomery county. This county has no reason to feel ashamed of the patriotism her young men show.
In the navy: Jesse Crunk, Louie Cable, Maurice Alley, Carl Olson, Stayten Pirtle, John Pirtle, Edwin Dewey Kelley, Loubie Cain, Emmett Vincent, Walter W. Templeton, Lee J. Darby, Cecil Lanmon more.
In the army: C. K. Crooke, Jno. W. Trout, Geo. V. Sherwood, Cleve C. Cariten, Ed Ellis, Lewis Smith, and Calvert Wagers.
This does not include several others who were here when they joined, but belonged in some other county.
Through the aftivity of S. K. Hailey, postmaster, several young men whose homes were not in Conroe have enlisted.
