Franklin Cemetery

Robertson County TX

NOTE:  I only do transcribing and helping people with genealogical research.  I have nothing to do with the cemetery, so if you are looking for information on purchasing plots or rules and regulations of the cemetery, contact the caretaker or a local funeral home.

This is the second Franklin Cemetery.  The Old Franklin Cemetery was located about two miles out of Franklin heading towards Hearne on Hwy 79.  It was to the left on a hill near where the Walter Daggett (McQuistian Ranch) home now sits.  Nothing remains of the Old Franklin Cemetery.

An historic marker at the current Franklin Cemetery reads: "The community of Franklin was originally established in 1872, and named Morgan for an official of the International Railway Company. By 1879, the town had 200 residents. When the community applied for its post office, another Texas post office was named Morgan, so residents changed the name to Franklin after the original county seat. A five-acre plot of land for a graveyard was deeded to Robertson County in 1880 as part of an incentive to persuade officials to locate the county courthouse in Franklin. However, six tombstones on this site predate its official designation as a graveyard. The first recorded burial is that of Elizabeth Calvert in 1869. Among the more than 1,300 graves are members of fraternal organizations, and veterans of the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. C. N. Brigance, veteran of the War of 1812, also is buried here. Interments include those of former city and county officials, state legislators E. A. Decherd and T. L. Goodman, and four local musicians who achieved national fame. The Franklin Cemetery continues to serve the citizens of Franklin and Robertson County as it has for more than 100 years." (1997)

Another marker reads: "In memory of all armed forces buried herein.  US Army, US Air Force, US Navy, US Marines."

The Franklin North and South Cemetery is located at the back/end of the Franklin Cemetery.

Map To Memorial Site

On Saturday, June 3, 1961, Henry W. Marshall was found shot to death near his pick-up truck on his Robertson County farm.  Originally ruled a suicide, questions surrounding the circumstances of Mr. Marshall's death and possible murder still exist.  Although Henry W. Marshall's body is buried in the Franklin Cemetery, the Marshall family has erected a tombstone and maintains the site where this death occurred.  This property is currently owned by Henry Marshall's son, Don Marshall of Spring, TX.  This memorial site, which is behind a locked gate and is inaccessible to the public, is on private land.  It is 1.2 miles off of a county road between Boone Prairie and Easterly.

Another correction and update - Franklin Cemetery
MCDONALD, VIRGINIA A., 1923 - ?, h Arthur B. McDonald
Virginia Loraine Starkey McDonald was born 5 Oct 1909 and died 29 Aug 1993 - she was my wife's mother

Virginia was the daughter of Bennett Hillery and Donie Bolton Starkey

Jane Keppler has made updates also.

The above list is partially based upon information contained in Tombstone Inscriptions Of Robertson County, Texas
by Inez Boswell Biggerstaff, 19 leaves, 28 cm, published between 1945 & 1968.  It is also partially based
upon information contained in the out-of-print book Cemeteries In Robertson County, Texas by Verna Corn Floyd and Vernelle Corn, copyright 1980, D. Armstrong Co., Inc., Printers/Publishers, Houston, Texas.  It is also partially based upon the Franklin Cemetery Association's Franklin Cemetery Book mentioned above.  Updates, additions, and corrections have been made as a result of extensive cemetery and family history research and the invaluable assistance of relatives of people buried in this cemetery.

The Franklin Cemetery Association has recently published a Franklin Cemetery Book ($25 donation requested....please check for price increase) that contains an up-to-date list of burials in this cemetery.  Compiled by Shirley Van Huss & Marry Wallace, this book contains a map identifying the cemetery's blocks and lot numbers.  It lists burials by block and lot as well as alphabetically.  A CD containing pictures of many of the tombstones is available for an additional $10.  This book does NOT include information on the adjoining Franklin North-South African American Cemetery.  To purchase a copy of this book, contact Shirley above or write to Franklin Cemetery Association, Inc., P.O. Box 215, Franklin, TX 77856.  This makes a great gift for a genealogy library.
