Norton Orviss Cemetery

According to volunteer Bill Norton in early 2002: "Behind the Calvert High School there are three or four cemeteries depending on how you count them. As you walk away from the back of the high school you first come to the Jewish Cemetery which is well maintained. To the left of that is a small plot of Nixon burials, also well maintained. Between that and the Hispanic Cemetery are scatterings of graves in a thickly wooded area. One grave is that of my great-grandfather, Charles M. Norton. There you will also find the magnificent Orviss mausoleum which looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie."

NORTON, CHARLES M., ? - ?

ORVISS, D. A., ? - after 1870, w Louisa Bush, no children

ORVISS, LOUISA BUSH, ? - ?, h D. A. Orviss, from Alton, IL, no children, sister of James G. Bush & Edward A. Bush (buried in Calvert City Cemetery)

Just thought Id let you know that there is one Confederate Soldier buried in the Norton-Orviss Cemetery area.  His name is John (Jonathan) Singleton.  He served as a Private in Co C, 19th (Dockerys) Arkansas Infantry (he was transferred to the 12th Regiment of Sharp Shooters on 24JUN1862 and was captured at Champion Hill, MS on 16MAY1963.  His VA headstone was received by Mr N.S. Singleton of Calvert on/about 20JUL1940.

All the information from here down is submitted by Capt. Lee R. Lance.

The person in the photo of the plot with the large flag is Robert Stevens of College Station who passed away in December 2018.  Our SCV Camp, Sul Ross Camp #1457 of Bryan cares for this grave and refreshes the flag in place there.

THE HARRELL FAMILY GRAVES

Liz Bearden Smith along with Mary Beard Haley posted this photo on Find A Grave website dated July 27, 2015 to show relationships of several of the Harrel family members as best as possible based on written family histories [Liz also has the pictures, documents and more posted on the Bearden Family Tree under James Abner Harrell].

Here is a listing of those internees:

Ada Finley Harrell Wakefield (06DEC1877 Calvert, Robertson Co, TX 31OCT1907 Milano, Milam Co, TX)

Ada Finley Harrell was born 3 miles east of Calvert in Robertson County, TX.  She married

William O Wakefield Jr on 10JAN1904 at Jones Prairie, Milam Co, TX.  She died at Age 29 of

tuberculosis in Milano, Milam Co, TX.  She is buried in what was the called The New City

Cemetery in Calvert.  There is no marker for her.

Charlie Robert Harrell (23JUL1883 Comanche Co, TX 20NOV1904 Calvert, Robertson Co, TX)

Mary Amanda Hogg Riley Noble (24NOV1814 Barnwell Co, SC 23JUN1904 Belton, Bell Co, TX)

Mary Amanda Hogg was born at "The Runs" in what was then Barnwell District, South

Carolina. She first married George Owen Riley on March 13, 1834. He died Aug 17, 1841.
Mary married second Joseph Beland Nobles (her first cousin) on Nov 9, 1842.
In 1851, Joseph headed out to Texas and Mary followed. They settled first in Navarro County, Texas where several more children were born and some married. They moved to Milam County, Robertson County, McLennan County, and other counties in Texas where other children married and/or settled.
     Joseph died in 1882.
Mary in 1904. Mary was buried beside 2 of her grandchildren at what was then called "The New City Cemetery" in Calvert, Robertson County Texas, But has been labeled as Norton-Orviss here on Find-a-Grave.
Two more grandchildren and a son-in-law who all died later are buried there as well. There is no marker for Mary or her grandchildren. There is a Confederate Service Military Tombstone that was erected in 1931 for the son-in-law. I feel very positive that the fenced in area that I found, with the help of others, in 2015 is where Mary, 3 grandsons, 1 grand-daughter and 1 son-in-law are buried.
Bio by Liz Smith, with location of burials from Mary Beard Haley.

James Abner Harrell (10SEP1847 Benton, Saline Co, AR 23JUL1905 Killeen, Bell Co, TX) VA Marker (shipped in 1931) is in place based on CSA service (Courier, Co B, 18th Texas Cavalry). He was father of Walter Joseph, Amanda Iola [Mantie], Ada Finley, Noble James and Charlie Robert Harrell [see family photo] which is why he probably was buried in Calvert rather than Killen.  Considering the timeframe of his death, he likely died of TB as well.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Eliza Noble in 1869; she is buried in Milano Cemetery, Milano, Milam Co, TX; her DoB was 18MAR1845 and DoD was 08FEB1939 at age 91. (Photos of James & family provided by Mary E Beard in FEB2015)
