San Augustine County, Texas

The Cradle of Texas Independence

 Childers Cemetery

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by Mr. Jay Gardner.

Location:  Go 8.8 miles south on Hwy 147, turn left on FM 705, cross Hwy 103 and travel to Hwy 83 (approximately 8.8 miles).  Turn left, go about 3/4 miles to where old FM 705 crosses Hwy 83.  Turn right, go about 100 yards.  To the left stood the old Massie School.  Abotu 300 yards more across the creek and up the hill is the small cemetery to the right and back in the woods.

There are no markers in this cemetery.  It is now overgrown and can barely be found.  There are only two or three graves of small children located here in unmarked graves.

The old "Bill Childers" home place was located here.  These children were buried under some trees in the back of the house.  It is thought the children died shortly before or after 1900.
