San Augustine County, Texas

The Cradle of Texas Independence

 Dwire Cemetery

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by the late Mrs. Sallie Whitton.

Location:  Go 2.7 miles from the San Augustine County Courthouse north on Hwy 147.  Turn on the old Tinsley Road.  Travel one mile.  At one time the old Dwire home stood to the right of the road on the hill overlooking the graves.  They are located about 200 feet to the left of the road under a very large oak tree.  The road has been straightened since this time.

The only people know to be buried in the unmarked graves are  Mr. and Mrs. Swire.  They were the mother and father of John M. Dwire, born 1834 in Virginia and died 1909.  He is buried in the Antioch Cemetery.
