 Edley Ewing Cemetery

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by  Mrs. McXie Martin and the late Mrs. Sallie Whitton.

Location:  Thought to be located somewhere on the old Edley Ewing homeplace.  According to some land deeds, the home place of Edley Ewing was a six hundred acre tract, bound ont eh west by land owend by Hiram Wilson and on the south by Felix G. Lovell.  Ewing stated in the deed that he had established his home site on 5 December 1840.  This tract of land is part of the land where the present Antioch Church of Christ building now stands, four and one-half miles north of San Augustine on Highway 147.

The only information known is that several years ago a lady who was a descendant of Edley Ewing left a letter at the Antioch Church building trying to determine the exact location where the Ewing' were buried.  It is only surmized that their unmarked graves are near the site or in the vicinity of the present Antioch Cemetery.

Edley Ewing was born about 1777.  He came to Texas about 1834.  He was first married to Elizabeth Love, who was born about 1781.  Their know children were Wilson E., Mary A, Amanda , William, Andrew, Henry, and James L.

Elizabeth Love Ewing died prior to 1845.  Edley Ewing remarried in 1845 to Mrs. Elizabeth Ardry, the widow of Alexander Ardry.  She was born about 1799 in Georgia.  Prior to Edley Ewing's death in 1848, he deeded his homestead to his second wife.  It is only surmized that the Ewing's were buried in a family cemetery near their home site.  Mrs. Elizabeth Ardry Ewing was remarried in 1850 to Ewing Wilson.
