New Hope Cemetery II

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by Jay Gardner.

Location: 8.8 miles from the court house on Hwy 147.  Turn left on FM 705, cross Hwy 103 and go about 8.5 miles, cross Hwy 83, go about 6.4 miles, turn off on FM 3173.  Go about 1.5 miles.  The old abandoned cemetery is located to the left about 250 yards off the road in the woods.

There are no monuments in this small cemetery.  There are only indentions of 3 or 4 graves with iron ore rocks marking the head and foot of the graves at the time of indexing.  It is unknown how many graves are here.

At one time the New Hope Church building stood here and the small cemetery was nereby.

The only information known is that some members of a "Coconut family" were buried at this site.  About one-half mile from this location is the Coconut Creek Branch.  Since there are no families with that surname listed on any census perhaps the reference was to families living in a community by that name.
