San Augustine County, Texas

The Cradle of Texas Independence

Old Newton Cemetery

Printed with permission of the San Augustine Public Library Board of Directors.  Originally contributed by the late J. P. "Pete" Mathews.

Location: At the intersection of Hwy 96 and FM 1277.  The cemetery was once located to the left in the point of intersection.

This small cemetery is no longer in existence.  In years past there were a few formal tombstones among some cedar trees.  When FM 1277 was constructed, information has it that a curve was laid in the road as it enters Hwy 96 to avoid going through the cemetery.

The number of people who were interred here cannot be determined.  The only information that can be obtained is that some members of Amanda Newton Smith's family were buried in this small family cemetery.  Amanda Newton Smith and her husband Adam J. Smith are buried in the Catholic/Smith Cemetery east of town.  The people listed below are surmised to be buried here.

NAME BIRTH DEATH FATHER MOTHER
