						MONTGOMERY —
Descendants of latter day Texians will gather in Cedar
Brake Park Saturday to celebrate the 175th birthday of
the Lone Star flag and the legacy of one of the creators
						of Texas’ most revered artifacts.

						A life-size
statue of Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart, credited with
inspiring the Lone Star flag (created in 1839) and with
designing the state seal of Texas, will be unveiled by
local artist Lynn Peverill, who in creating her first
bronze statue unveils the first of five historical
						statues in Cedar Brake Park.

						“Stewart
will be the first of five statues representing pioneer
Texas,” said Sonya Clover, president of the Patrons of
Cedar Brake Park. “However, he will be the only
real-life person represented in the park.”
						Future
statues will include a pioneer woman, farmer, logger and
						rancher, Clover said.
						Stewart, a
pharmacist, doctor, and political leader in the Republic
of Texas, represented Texas (while still a territory) at
the signing of its declaration of independence from
Mexico. Stewart was also the first to represent
Montgomery County in the Texas House of Representatives
and additionally served as Texas’ first secretary of
						state.
						The Patrons
of Cedar Brake Park, in conjunction with the Montgomery
Economic Development Corporation and the Historic
Montgomery Business Association, sponsors the historical
event from 10 a.m. to noon.
						Kameron
Searle, a descendant of Stewart, will be at the
unveiling of the new bronze statue.
						Montgomery
County Republican Party Chairman Dr. Walter Wilkerson
will emcee the event, with TV singing competition
contestant Lizzie Gallatin performing the National
						Anthem.
						The
Montgomery High School girls jazz choir will perform,
and retired military personnel will serve as members of
the Marine Corps League Color Guard.
						“Saturday
will be a celebration, an opportunity to honor the Texas
history that we have right here in Montgomery,” said
Shannon Reid, with the Montgomery Economic Development
						Corporation.
						Eagle Scouts
Sam Hadley and Scott Miller, of Troop 491 in Montgomery,
worked to create the base and landscaping that will
secure the placement of the Stewart statue, all part of
						their Eagle Scout project.
						Cedar Brake
Park was established in 1996 under a grant from the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and is one of the
first handicapped-accessible public parks in Texas.
