JOHN CHARLES BOOKOUT

John Charles Bookout was born on July 10, 1916 in Fulton, Mississippi the
son of Troy and Ethyl Turnor Bookout. As a teenager, he moved to the Rio
Grand Valley of Texas and joined the CCC for two years. John then joined the
Navy and was a World War II submarine veteran, spending 22 years on active
duty. He retired in 1961 as a Sr. Chief Petty Officer. He worked a couple of
years in the Middle East and in the mid-1960's went to work for NASA as a
Maintenance Technician, retiring in 1983.
John married the love of his life, Alene Keyes, on October 8, 1944. He loved
hunting, fishing and gardening. He especially loved teasing, and spending
time with his grandchildren. John was very active in the First Baptist
Church of Bellville where he was a Deacon and a greeter.
He passed away Sunday, October 17, 2004 at his home at the age of 88.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alene Bookout of Bellville; sons,
John C. Bookout, Jr. and his wife, Gale of Wiergate, Richard L. Bookout and
his wife, Carol of El Paso; daughter, Jo Ann Parkins and her husband, Mark
also of El Paso; grandchildren, Daryl Bookout, Paula Porterfield, Mark
Bookout, Richard L. Bookout, Jr., Andrew Bookout, Sarah Bookout, James
Holloway, Matthew and Melissa Parkins, Laura and Michael Bookout; eleven
great-grandchildren; brothers, Hoyt Bookout of Harlingen, and James Bookout
of Corpus Christi; sister, Louise Richardson of Santa Rosa; numerous nieces
and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his son, Troy Bookout; his parents; and a
sister, Bonnie Patterson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the
Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville with Pastor Jeff English and Pastor
Carl Williamson officiating. A graveside service was held at 2:30 p.m. at
the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr. In Houston.
Pallbearers were Daryl Bookout, Rick Bookout, Jamie Holloway, Mark Bookout,
Andy Bookout and Michael Bookout. Honorary pallbearers were Marion Ruggles,
Clinton Brast, Lee Persky and Jerry Sisson.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Schmidt Funeral Home,
Bellville.
