Funeral services for Gilbert Herbert Engelholm were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville with Rev. H. Eldon Akerman officiating. Interment followed in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tray Moses, Chet Richter, Roy Lee Engelholm, Vernon Engelholm, Dale Taska and Clifton Hein.

Honorary pallbearers were Harry Zander, Buck Kollman, Allen Hintz, J.W. Luedke, Kirby Zanek and Gary Zander.  

Gilbert Engelholm was born Oct. 6, 1919 in Nelsonville, Texas, the son of Robert C. and Cecilia Janosky Engelholm. He attended grade school at Travis and Oak Hill and high school in Bellville.

He worked on a farm and painted houses before his induction into the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 1, 1941. Gilbert served at Camp Roberts, California and Fort lewis, Washington before boarding the Queen Elizabeth in March 1942. He landed in Sidney, Australia and saw his first combat in New Guinea. In Oct. 1944, he received the Good Conduct Ribbon, and was awarded the American Defense Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon and 1 Battle Star,. He was assigned to the Military Police Post in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania where he met Theresa Riviello Gilbert and was honorably discharged Sept. 26, 1945.

On May 4, 1946 Gilbert and Theresa were united in marriage at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville. They have made their home in Bellville for 58 years where they have been members of St. John's.

A painting contractor for 39 years, Gilbert enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and telling stories to his grandchildren. He also enjoyed visiting with his many friends, playing dominoes and watching the Bellville Brahma and Texas A&M football teams. He was a member of the Bellville VFW Post #6522 and the SPJST and Sons of Hermann Lodges.

Gilbert Herbert Engelholm passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 in Bellville at the age of 84.

He is survived by his wife Theresa Engelholm; daughter Patty Richter and her husband Dennis; grandchildren Chet Richter and his friend Doni Koch and her daughter Meagan, Mindy Moses and her husband Tray and 2 great grandchildren Cole and Cassie Moses, all of Bellville. He is also survived by his brothers James A. Engelholm and Robert W. Engelholm, both of Bellville; sister Bernice Taska and her husband Delvin of Blessing and many other dear friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dennis Engelholm.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
