Leona Spiess, age 87, of Bleiblerville passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007 at
Trinity Medical Center.
Mrs. Spiess was born July 3, 1919 in New Wehdem to Edward and Malinda
Schroeder Winkelmann. She was baptized Aug. 17, 1919 at St. James Lutheran
Church of New Wehdem by Pastor H.C. Poehlmann and confirmed Oct. 1, 1933 at
Welcome Lutheran Church by Pastor Jacob Appel.
On Nov. 25, 1940 she married John Spiess at Welcome Lutheran Church.
She was a cook at The Bowlerama and Blinn College.
Mrs. Spiess was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Welcome,
WELCA, Mary Martha Circle and Altar Guild at church along with quilting for
nursing homes. Other memberships were Sons of Hermann, Bleiblerville VFD
Women's Auxiliary, volunteer and judge for Austin County Fair. She loved
doing for others and working with her flowers, gardening, canning, playing
cards and dominoes.
Her parents and spouse, John Spiess on Oct. 11, 1980; 2 brothers Ervin and
Arthur Winkelmann; brother-in-law Elton Emshoff and sisters-in-law Lillie
and Elda Winkelmann preceded her in death.
Survivors are daughters and sons-in-law Marilyn Lange and husband David and
Shirley Ganske and husband James all of Brenham; 5 grandchildren Michael and
Cammie Ganske, Pamela and Matt Zibilski, Dewayne Lange, John and Renee
Lange, Jason and Lindsey Lange; 4 great grandchildren Robin Ganske, Laura
Zibilski, Carmynn Lange, Reagan Lange; sister Ruby Emshoff of Sealy;
sisters-in-law Mable Winkelmann of Bleiblerville and Minnie Washam of
Welcome and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at Brenham Memorial
Chapel.
Funeral services were 3 p.m.. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at Salem Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Welcome with the Rev. Jason Korthauer officiating. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Michael Ganske, Matt Zibilski, Dewayne Lange, John Lange,
Jason Lange and Randall Kohring.
Memorials may be given to the Salem of Welcome Lutheran Church Building or
Church Scholarship Fund or charity of choice.
Services are under the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel.
