Funeral services for Lester E. Ashorn, 92, of Sealy were held Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Cat Spring with Pastor Kevin Haug officiating. Interment was at Sealy Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clay Miller, David Kabell, Dick Kabell, Bob Berger, David Hauschild and Terry Ashorn.
Lester was born in New Ulm to Willie and Mary Muench Ashorn. He was baptized Dec. 10,1916 in New Ulm and confirmed Sept. 7,1930 at the Cat Spring Lutheran Church.
He married Anita Kulow on January 16, 1949 in Sealy with the Rev. O.C. Schriener performing the ceremony. He was raised on a farm near Sealy.
He attended school in Millheim, Cleveland and Cat Spring public schools. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball with his friends and as he grew older his love of baseball changed to a love for gardening and spending time with his family and friends.
Lester has been in the business world in Sealy since 1935. He went to work for Gus Nentwig in the dairy and broom factory in 1942. He then moved into dry good sales when he went to work for Mrs. Gus Nentwig at the Quality Shop and continued to work for Ennis Nentwig until the store closed.
Lester worked for the Nentwig family for 53 years. He then worked for Zapalac’s Downtown Grocery from April 1987 to May 1994 when it closed.
He was member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an Elder, Treasurer and Usher. At his time of death he was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Cat Spring.
Lester Ashorn died Monday, July 28, 2008 at River Oaks Health Care Center in Columbus.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debbie Ashorn of Sealy; granddaughter Theresa and husband Clay Miller and great-granddaughter Shelby Miller all of New Braunfels; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Michaelis, May dell Reichart and Annie Ashorn all of Sealy and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Winnie and her husband Edwin Kabell; brother Leroy Ashorn; brothers-in-law Walter Kulow, Luke Miehaelis and Kermit Reichart.
Funeral services were held under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels in Sealy.
