JAMES "JIM" MALER

James "Jim" Maler was born in Sealy, Texas on April 2, 1934, the son of
Frances Krupala Maler and George Edward Maler, and passed away in his
Bellville home on Feb. 22, 2008 at the age of 73
He grew up in Sealy and graduated from Sealy High School in 1951.
He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from Jan. 14, 1955 through
Dec. 17, 1957, and he was a 1962 graduate of Southwest Texas State College
in San Marcos.
On Oct. 2, 1965 he married Della Duke.
Jim enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren, fishing, riding around
the country roads, seeing the deer and looking at the various crops growing.
He was a long-time employee of The Bellville Times, was named news editor
and advertising manager in 1965, bought into ownership of the paper in 1970
and served as the paper's editor and publisher until April 1, 1996 when he
became the business manager.
He enjoyed covering the news and writing about it.
Jim was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church; supported Austin County
Youth Auction as a buyer; was a member of the Bellville Volunteer Fire
Department; a 37-year member of the Bellville Lions Club; an FFA Honorary
Chapter Farmer; a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (1968); served on
the Bellville Library Board in its early years; co-sponsored the Austin
County Spelling Bee for many years; a member of the Austin County Livestock
Association; a member of the Sportsman Association; a member of American
Legion Post 115 and a member of the Austin County Farm Bureau.
Besides his wife Della, survivors include: Daughter Sheila Huggins and her
husband Michael of Spokane, Wash. and son James Christopher Maler and La
Kisha Keraney of Sealy; grandchildren Reagan, Chloe and Sydney Huggins of
Spokane, Wash. and Kacee Maler of Sealy; siblings Mildred Maler Love and
husband Orval of Spring, Robert and Ann Maler of Cameron, Dorothy Maler Dias
and husband James of St. Helen, Ore.; Betty Maler McBride and husband Gerald
of Sealy and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Frances Maler, brother
George Eugene Maler and nephew Jeff Duke.
Funeral services for James "Jim" Maler of Bellville were held Tuesday, Feb.
26, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Nelsonville Brethren Church with the Rev. Michael
Groseclose officiating
Burial followed in the Sealy Cemetery with a full military service.
Serving as pallbearers were Bruce White, David Pacher, Carl Ed. Lucas Jr.,
David Emswiler, Jay Larson and Michael Huggins.
Honorary pallbearers include James "Bubba" Duke, Buddy Preuss, David True,
Franklin Casper, Gerald McBride, Cecil Lucas, Wayne Lucas, Sam Preuss and
Jess Keefe.
