EARL REESE MEYERS, JR.

Earl Reese Meyers, Jr., 75, of Millheim passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 in Webster, Texas.

 Earl Reese Meyers, Jr. was born on Jan. 14, 1933 in Houston to parents Earl Reese and Adelle Mersman Meyers.

He spent his early childhood in the Millheim community with his maternal grandparents, Ernest and Mathilde Mersman.

He then moved to Houston to live with his mother and stepfather, Thomas B. West. He attended Houston schools through his sophomore year at Reagan High School.

He returned to Millheim and completed his high school education graduating from Bellville High School in 1951. He then attended Blinn College and graduated with an Associates of Arts degree in Business.

After falling in love at first sight, he married his sweetheart, Gloria Ann Goebel on Feb. 13, 1952.

After working for a short time at Humble Oil in Katy he was employed by Sealy Butane Company.

In 1955 he began his own business, Bellville Butane Company, where he and Gloria worked together until 1991.

Earl was licensed to preach and ordained as a deacon by First Baptist Church, Bellville. Seeing the need to proclaim the Gospel in west Austin County, Earl and Gloria joined with other members of First Baptist Church, Bellville to found the West End Baptist Mission in Industry. He was the mission pastor from 1980 to 1984. He continued to serve West End Baptist Church as an active member and deacon until his death.

He was also a member of the Millheim Harmonie Verein and the Order of the Sons of Hermann. He loved to fish, hunt, and care for his cattle. In his retirement years he and Gloria were able to make many trips together and he was able to pursue his love for drawing.

God called him home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Friday morning, Dec. 19, 2008 at Clear Lake Medical Center.

Survivors include his children and spouses, Neil and Mary Beth Meyers of Valdosta, Ga., Sherry and Hal Smith of Friendswood, Texas, and Danny and Dena Meyers of Bellville, grandchildren, Stephen and Elizabeth Meyers, Adam and Brett Smith, Valerie Meyers, and Meghan and Dallas Dodd, great grandchild, Braedon Dodd and half brothers and spouses, Max and B.J. Myers, Larry and Grace Myers, Dalton and Carolyn Myers, Marvin and Charlene Myers and half sister and spouse Doris and Harry Stewart and half sister Darlene Myers.

 He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Ann, parents, Earl Reese and Adelle Mersman Meyers, half brothers, Robert Myers and James Myers and grandchild, Erin Michelle Meyers.

Friends may call Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, 842 E. Main, Bellville.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. from West End Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Keen, officiating. Burial will follow in Millheim Cemetery. Pallbearers are Stephen Meyers, Adam Smith, Brett Smith, Dallas Dodd, John Winship and Charles Walther.

Honorary Pallbearers are Max Myers, Larry Myers, Dalton Myers and Marvin Myers.
