Carlos Byron "Fox" Young, 83, of Willow City, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Windcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shaetter Funeral Home with the Rev. Casey Zesch officiating. David Mayfield played the guitar and sang and Max Hartmann shared family remembrances.
Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.
Numerous Bellville area deer hunters lease property from Mr. Young.
Carlos was born to Charles L. Young and Ada Hardin Young on July 17, 1924 in Fredericksburg and was raised on the family ranch at Willow City.
He was a life long rancher in the Willow City community, but was also a "jack of all trades," involved in plumbing, electrical work and more. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing and making his daily appearances at the local general store in Willow City.
He was a charter member of the Willow City Volunteer Fire Department and was active with Willow City Community Club functions.
Carlos married Margaret Crenwelge on Oct. 16, 1947, at Bethany Lutheran Church and she survives.
A World War II veteran, Carlos enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 8, 1944, at fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He served in M-Company 34th Infantry Battalion. Fox served in the Southern Philippines and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the Victory Ribbon, Overseas Service Bars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the Japan-Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and the lapel button. He was discharged at Fort Sam Houston on June 10, 1946.
In addition to his wife, Carlos is survived by a son, Carroll Young of Willow City; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Leland Geistweidt of Fredericksburg; and grandchildren: Carroll-Young Jr. of Kerrville; Brittany Geistweidt of San Antonio, and Kari Rumbaugh and her husband, Jacob, of Shreveport, LA.
Also surviving are sisters- and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Roland Hohmann and Beatrice and Herbert Grote, all of Willow City; Marvin Ahrens of Fredericksburg, and Viola Caraway of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a sister, Florine Young.
Memorials maybe made to the Willow City Volunteer Fire Dpt., Bethany Lutheran Church or to the charity of choice.
Pallbearers included Patrick Hohmann, Bert Welch, Dudley Althaus, Max Hartmann, Billy Stasny and Jack Laurence.
