 ELLA HARNADEAN 'DEANIE' CROWHURST MATTHEWS

Ella Harriadean �Deanie� Crowhurst Matthews passed away on March 15, 2012 in Bellville.

She was born to John William and Alice Elizabeth Roe Crowhurst in Waller on Aug. 19, 1916. Her family later moved to a farm. She talked about picking cotton with her brother Joe and riding on the cotton sack. She attended rural schools in Waller County, Waller High School, and graduated from Hempstead High School in 1934. 

After graduating she went to live in Waco with her cousin Harriadean Johnson and her husband A.C. She worked in their beauty and barber supply business. She got homesick and after a year came home to Hempstead. 

Around 1936, she met the love of her life, Roy H. Matthews from Navasota. After being courted for four years, she and Roy eloped on a rainy September 21, 1940 night to Chappell Hill, Texas and were married by the Justice of the Peace. 

Deanie and Roy were blessed with the births of two children, Roy Jr. and Carole Deane. In 1950 the family moved to Hempstead. Deanie was a wife, mother, and homemaker for many years. When Roy Jr. was in high school and Carole Deane in Junior High, Deanie went to work at Schwarz�s Dept. Store in Hempstead. She worked for 25+ plus years as a sales clerk. She especially enjoyed her trips to Dallas to the Apparel Mart to shop for the store. She was a faithful member of the Trinity Apostolic Faith Church in Hempstead. She gave her heart to Jesus at a young age and served Him faithfully. She taught Sunday school and was church treasurer for many years. She also served as Vice President of the Hempstead PTA and was a co-leader for a Girl Scouts troop. 

Deanie was preceded in death by her husband Roy, on January 17, 1998 after 57+ years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Frederick, Ernest, Albert, Joe, Leonard and Gilbert Crowhurst, and by one sister, Mary Crowhurst Dewees. 

She is survived by her son Roy H. Matthews Jr. and his wife Cecelia of Mission Viejo, California, and her daughter Carole Deane Fry and her husband Richard of Bellville; granddaughters, Karri Matthews Hammerstrom and her husband Bill of Kingsburg, California, Kelli Matthews Kimmel and her husband Matt of Laguna Hills, California; grandsons, Matt Fry and his wife Kindra of College Station, Texas and Cody Fry and his wife Dawn of Armstrong, Texas; great grandchildren, Macey and Cy Hammerstrom, Hudson, Wyatt, and Abbey Kimmel, Riley and Ethan Fry, and Faith, Grace, and Cody Fry; sister-in-law, Louise Crowhurst of Hempstead and brother-in-law, Raymond Schroeder of Port Neches, Texas. She is also mourned by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Funeral Services were conducted at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel in Bellville at 2  p.m. on March 23, 2012, Rev. John Arnall of Hempstead will officiate, with Rev. Jim Fox of Katy, Rev. Mike Brening of Pine Hill, Alabama, Rev. Ron Brening of Hempstead, Texas and Rev. Charles Denman of Rockdale, Texas assisting. Friends will be received from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, 842 East Main St., Bellville. Burial will take place in the Shiloh Cemetary, north of Waller.
