WILLIAM C. 'BILLY' STECK
Bellville Times William C. �Billy� Steck, age 82 years of Bellville passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in Bellvilles. Billy was born on May 5, 1930 to Marcus and Norma Steck in Sealy. He attended school at Haceinda, Sugar Land and graduated from Bellville High School in 1948. He was class president all four years in High School. He was confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church on December 18, 1949. Billy enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948, and discharged in 1949, and served 6 years in the reserves. On May 11, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth Hueske at St. John Lutheran Church by Pastor A.J. Mohr. On Aug. 6, 1952, they became the proud parents of a daughter, Christine Marie Steck. In September 1950, he went to work for Santa Fe Railroad Company for six months, took a leave of absence from his job and signed a contract to play pro baseball as a pitcher with the Bryan Bombers of the East Texas League, a farm club of the New York Giants, threw two no hitters in his career, developed an arm problem and had to quit. He went back to work for Santa Fe Railroad Company and retired in 1989. He managed to coach in Little League for 40 years. Later on he coached the girl�s softball. He loved to play golf and had four �Holes in one.� Billy was a member of the Bellville Beautification Foundation, past member of St. John Lutheran Brotherhood, served on Church Council for two terms, member of Golf and Recreation Club, member of Men�s Choir since 1972. Around the age of 72 he was inducted into the Old Timers Hall of Fame in Halletsville. He was awarded the Sons of Hermann Humanitarian Award. Billy is preceded in death by his parents Marcus and Norma Steck, brothers Eugene Steck, Earl Steck and Hover Steck. Billy is survived by his wife of 62 years Ruth Hueske Steck of Bellville, daughter Christie Marie Whitesides of Austin, grandchildren Misty Whitesides of Austin and Ryan Whitesides of Austin, great grandchildren Layla Whitesides of Austin and Ethan Whitesides of Austin, two brothers Dean Steck of Bellville and Marcus Steck, Jr. of Houston, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville with Rev. Jennie Jones and Rev. David Henske, co-officiating. Interment was in Oak Knoll Cemetery. Family received friends on Friday, July 13, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Knesek Funeral Home, 842 East Main, Bellville. Pallbearers were Ryan Whitesides, John Pritchett, Charlie Wiggs, A.C. Pacher, Dale Steck and Alan Wienecke. Honorary pallbearers were St. John�s Men�s Choir and his golfing buddies.
