Welcome to Lee County Texas

Black Grove Cemetery

To preserve the history of old country cemeteries from being lost the below was taken from LEE COUNTY TEXAS CEMETERIES Volume I.  You can buy copies at Texas Wendish Heritage Society

These directions were taken in January 1980, so they may not be completely accurate as of today, 4/25/2022.

Take FM 2440 from Giddings, Texas for 6.2 miles, turn right on State Highway 21 for 2.1 miles, turn left on County Road 324 where there is a large sign directing you to the Black Jack Ranch. Go for 1.3 miles to ranch headquarters. Ranch foreman Mr. Ray Pearson states that on the ranch land deeds 1 acre has been set aside for this cemetery. The cemetery is not fenced located in a pasture with cattle. There was only one marker found. Cemetery was survey by Jan Conn & Ray Pearson in January 1980.

There are several unmarked graves.

BLACK GROVE Cemetery

The only remaining headstone and foot stone, lying flat on ground, belong to Hilery Elder (1824-1885) and are recorded in FindAGrave records. The iron fence enclosure is unidentified. Lee County Tax records record a deed for this property once owned by Hilery Elder circa 1884, now buried on property.

Descendants of more recent family ownership history states that there were more graves and may have also been a church on the property.  Remembrance of wooden picket fencing, iris growing, older tombstones dated back to the 1850’s located on approximately 1 acre unfenced wooded pasture.  Also, CR109 may split the cemetery. At one time the cemetery included other graves marked &/or enclosed with rocks and large stones.

The property including cemetery which is today cleared and remains not fenced, was surveyed by Jan Conn & Ray Pearson, January 1980. The property is currently part of the Black Jack Ranch.
