Welcome to Lee County Texas

Washington Cemetery

On the south side of Lee County there is an old Negro Cemetery near the Center Union A.M.E. Church.  The land was donated by Henry Wanke, Sr. and founded by Charlie Washington and his wife, Nannie Washington.

According to resources by Mrs. Annie Tschatschula, there are many old settlers buried in the old cemetery.

These are noted as being buried here.

Carry Matten  NOTE 7/15/2023

My name is Robert M Jones

rmjones1970@sbcglobal.net

of Chicago, Illinois. Many years ago I started doing my family history in Texas. Long before Washington Cemetery was cleaned up and protected by State of Texas I read the article by Mrs Annie Tschatschula. It offered the location even though because of the growth of trees, weeds etc not even people in the area knew much about it.
I found out my Grandmother had in her will that she wanted to be buried there with her husband (my Grandfather) He was already there. She wanted a double tombstone.I was in contact with Mr Jim Heathman of Bastrop and together with myself, (he and a friend of his) we located the cemetery. After obtaining permission from the owner they went to the site, climbed over a fence or two and took pictures of a few headstones of my relatives. I am very familiar with the surnames of other possible relatives. Pryor, Motens, Baileys and Denmons.
The correct spelling for my Grandmother is Carrie Moten (not Carry Matten) Grandfather Isaac M. Moten.
