Mathew Marshall

Submit Information

Mathew Marshall was born 1780 in probably Burke County, Georgia. He died about 1852, probably in Newton County, Texas. No sources have been found for this information currently. Mathew is believed to be the son of another Mathew Marshall found in Burke County, GA. He is believed to have immigrated from Ireland, possibly on the same boat as Alexander McCullar/McCullough.

In 1784-1788, a Matthew Marshall who might be his father had land surveyed in Burke County, Georgia. A John Marshall also had land surveyed and is found next to the land of Matthew Marshall: 1784, 100 acres, Book E, page 158, land is situated next to a Jno. MARSHALL [have plat saved] Bounded southwesterly by land of Jno. MARSHALL and northwest by land of David MURON and the other sides by vacant land. Certified 17 Nov 1784

This older Mathew Marshall who had land surveyed in Burke County, GA and was said "to be a resident of Burke County" might also be the father of a Joseph Marshall who had sons Mathew Marshall [d. 1862, Claiborne, LA], Hamilton J. Marshall [d. 1841, Hinds County, MS], Washington Marshall [mentioned in estate records of Henry D. Marshall [d. 1836, Hinds County, MS] . Or John might be the father. NOTE: the Mathew Marshall who died 1862 in Claiborne, LA has often been mistaken for our Mathew Marshall. He is not.

The Mathew who married Rhoda is not our Mathew either, or his father. Three different Mathew Marshalls have been confused over the years. See this Mathew Marshall on Wikitree for a clearer picture. I spent a long time trying to untangle the different Mathew Marshalls.

Mathew is believed to have died in 1852 in Newton County, Texas. [Primary source not found]

Mathew married Mary Ann "Polly" McCullar about 1810, the daughter of Alexander McCullar and Esther Magee, who came from Northern Ireland in the early 1770’s along with the Magee family on the ship "Hopewell". It has always been believed that the father of this Mathew also came from Northern Ireland with these families.

Mathew Marshall is found with the McCullar and Woods families in 1812 in Franklin County, Tennessee. In 1815, he signed a petition asking Congress for an extension of payments on their land due to inability to pay due to the war with the Creek Nation and the War of 1812. In 1815 and 1816, he is found on the tax roll for Lawrence County, Mississippi, but not taxed for land. Mathew is then found alternating between Mississippi and Tennessee until he is finally found in Newton County, Texas in 1850 living with his grandson Hiram Woods. He is 70 years old.

Known children of Mathew and Mary Ann are:
*Joel Green Marshall [1812 - bef 1850] **not proved
*Nancy Marshall Woods [1814 - 1893]
*William Riley "Bill" Marshall [1815 - 1888]
*John Robert Marshall [1816 - 1889] - arrived in Newton County in 1847.
*Alexander J Marshall [1824 - 1910]
*Isaac Marshall [1827 - died in Civil War]

Mary Ann died sometime before 1850.
