What are Black Box Documents?
Explained by Vera Meek Wimberly

The Black Box Documents are those original documents which were created in probating a will or settling an estate.  A typical estate settlement  may include Application for Probate of Will, a Will, Application for Letters of Administration or Guardianship, Administrators Bonds and Guardianship Bonds.  Inventories, Citations, Requests for Partition, and the invoices, vouchers, receipts, notes, etc. presented in each case.

These documents were placed in individual envelopes or packets and numbered.  The number corresponding to the probate case.  The packets are then filed in metal boxes which are dark in color - therefore, the name Black Boxes.  These boxes are housed in the Montgomery County Courthouse.

A book entitled "Death Dates & Marriages Inferred in Montgomery County, Texas Black Box Documents 1838 – 1900" was comprised of the death dates as recorded and the marriage records inferred in the "black boxes" documents.  These records were taken from the first five volumes of the Black Box Probate Records as published by Montgomery County Genealogy & Historical  Society, Inc.
